JENNY TALIADOROS
is the real woman behind scores of pretty paper dolls. The publisher
and founder of Paper Studio Press, she turned a childhood passion
into a business in 1991 and since then, her thriving company
has been responsible for the growing renaissance of interest
in paper dolls. Not only does Taliadoros head a booming business
that creates, publishes and markets paper doll books by renowned
artists for a niche market of passionate collectors, but she
also is the driving force behind the Original Paper Doll Artists
Guild, a quarterly magazine started in 1984 by her mother, Judy
M Johnson, a well known artist. In addition, since 1999, she
has co-edited Paperdoll Review magazine with famed
artist, Marilyn Henry. In addition to building the subscriber
base of the special interest magazines, Taliadoros has also
built a successful paper doll mail order and website business
under the same name.
In 2005,
Taliadoros reached out to paper doll artists around the world
to compile a special book, Paper Doll Artists Gallery
with 22 original paper dolls by 22 artists, and in the process
launched her own publishing imprint, Paper Studio Press. The
interest among collectors was such that Taliadoros recognized
an opportunity to create and publish new, original paper doll
books by artists of today. She now has a stable of top artists
in the field that includes Tom Tierney, Marilyn Henry, David
Wolfe, Jim Howard, Brenda Sneathen Mattox, Norma Lu Meehan,
Judy M Johnson, Sandra Vanderpool, Larry Bassin and Charlotte
Whatley. Since then, the small publishing house has grown to
encompass a catalog of more than 40 titles. New projects are
constantly in the works at Paper Studio Press, ensuring a cavalcade
of paper dolls to be enjoyed for years to come. In a recent
issue of the OPDAG magazine, Paper Doll Studio, Taliadoros
featured original paper doll art she had arranged to be created
by students at the New York High School of Art and Design. Jenny
Taliadoros obviously believes paper dolls have a future as well
as a past.
Taliadoros
publishing house began by restoring and reprinting rare and
coveted vintage paper doll books from the 40s and 50s.
The subjects included iconic stars such as Lana Turner, Bette
Davis, Ava Gardner and Rita Hayworth, among others. A paper
doll book of Marilyn Monroe was the first new project and it
was followed by a heavenly bevy of glamorous starsGinger
Rogers, Esther Williams, Jane Powell, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich,
Rhonda Fleming, Betty Hutton, Phyllis McGuire, Arlene Dahl,
Ida Lupino, Donna Reed and even the famous funny lady, Phyllis
Diller. In 2009, Taliadoros landed a contract with Paramount
Studios to produce a paper doll of the mega movie musical, Grease,
featuring Olivia Newton-John.
Taliadoros
enjoys small-town life in the mountains of Maine with her husband,
Chris. That lifestyle contrasts dramatically with her celebrity
licensing deals which entail travel to Hollywood, New York and
Las Vegas. Taliadoros confesses to being star struck and enjoys
her show business dealings that often lead to personal meetings
with stars who are thrilled to be immortalized as paper dolls.
One star-packed trip to Hollywood can encompass lunch with Rhonda
Fleming, dinner with Jane Withers and cocktails with Phyllis
Diller after taking meetings at Paramount Studios.
By spearheading
the revival of paper dolls as a hands-on, arts and crafts interest
in this age of hi-technology, Jenny Taliadoros is reminding
a time-pressured society to slow down and play paper dolls (perhaps
even more rewarding than smelling the roses). When covering
the annual International Paper Doll Convention held last year
in Las Vegas, the local newspaper reported, Most of the
conventioneers here speak of a paper doll lull that lasted through
the '80s and '90s. Then, out of nowhere they say, a paper doll
momentum picked up a few years ago and blew the dust off old
collections while introducing several new ones. That's largely
thanks to Jenny Taliadoros who launched a paper doll publishing
company, Paper Studio Press, in 2005.
Recently,
to further her quest to generate renewed interest in paper dolls,
Taliadoros took part in the prestigious annual fashion conference
in Manhattan, sponsored by Initiatives in Art and Culture. The
audience was enthralled with her presentation of the charming
little world of paper dolls and the story of Paper Studio Press.
